Open Cell Spray Foam Insulation in Houston

You may have heard that there are two different kinds of spray foam insulation, referred to as “open cell” and “closed cell.” But what do those terms mean, and which one is better? The answer to the latter question is “it depends,” but the insulation experts at IBP Houston are here to make the decision easier on you! We work with both types and can analyze your specific needs to determine whether open cell or closed cell spray foam is right for you.

What Is Open Cell Foam Insulation?

One of the most widely installed types of insulation, spray foam is used for both residential and commercial projects. The two main types of spray foam insulation are closed cell and open-cell. Open cell is a type of foam where the tiny cells are not completely closed. Open cell foam cells are less dense and filled with air, which gives the insulation a spongy texture and a lower R-value (although it can achieve a greater R-value if not restricted by space). Low-density open cell polyurethane foams are similar to conventional polyurethane foams but more flexible. In general, open cell spray foam insulation:

  • Helps provide an air barrier but doesn’t offer a water vapor barrier
  • Is frequently used for interior walls because it can help with soundproofing
  • Can be less expensive

Open Cell Foam Insulation R-Value

First of all, what is R-value? Put simply, the “R” in R-value stands for resistance, and it’s a basic measurement of an insulation material’s heat resistance. In general, the higher the R-value, the better the insulation is at resisting the flow of heat. Polyurethane open cell foam, which contains a low-conductivity gas in its cells, has an R-value ranging from R-5.5 to R-6.5 per inch. Open cell insulation cells are filled with air and less dense, so they have lower R-values than closed cell insulation.
