Why Is There Standing Water in My Gutters?

House's gutters during rain storm

Your gutters are supposed to drain rainwater from the roof to a downspout that deposits the water away from your home’s foundation. There shouldn’t be standing water in your gutters because this could lead to mold growth or pest problems. Excessive weight from standing water could even cause the gutter to pull away from the fascia. If you notice that water lingers in your gutters too long after it rains, figure out the cause and find a solution.

A Clogged Downspout Can Cause Standing Water in the Gutters

This is the most common problem that plagues gutter systems. If ignored, clogged downspouts can cause gutters to fill with water, resulting in damage to the roof, siding and foundation as water pours over the sides of the gutter.

The simplest way to prevent standing water in gutters is to clean them twice a year–once in the fall after most of the leaves are off the trees, and again in the spring to clear away pine needles and birds’ nests. You can clean your gutters yourself if you feel up to it, or you can leave the job to a professional.

For chronically clogged gutters, consider installing a gutter guard. This is particularly useful for homes in wooded areas, but anyone can install a gutter guard to avoid cleaning the gutters ever again. A screen over the gutters allows water to drain from the roof like usual, but debris can’t follow. This way, your gutters and downspouts always remain clear, and the problem of standing water becomes a thing of the past.

Inadequate Slope Can Cause Standing Water in the Gutters

Gutters must be installed at the proper angle to guide water toward the downspouts. Anything less than one-quarter inch of slope per 10 feet of gutter could result in standing water. To make sure your gutters are draining properly, climb up a ladder after a rainstorm and take a look. If water pools in a corner and no debris is present, this is a clear sign of improper sloping.

To correct this problem, you must use a leveler to realign the poorly pitched gutter section. Simply bending the hanger may be enough to create the proper slope. If not, you might need to take the section down and re-hang it. For the best results, contact a professional for help, especially if you have seamless gutters.
